Porsche Museum Gmünd
Auf dem Rückweg meines Urlaubs im wunderschönen Slowenien fuhren wir durch die Täler Österreichs. Durch zahlreiche Tunnel und Kilometer lange Pässe schlängelt sich die Autobahn durch das Land. Inmitten dieser malerischen Kulisse liegt die kleine Stadt Gmünd in Kärnten, welche ein ganz besonderes Museum beheimatet. Es geschah vor nun knapp 80 Jahren, dass ein talentierte Konstrukteur diesen Ort als Heimat für sein Büro wählte. Die Rede ist von niemand geringerem als Ferdinand Porsche. Von 1944 bis 1951 hausierte in Gmünd die Porsche-Konstruktionen-Ges.m.b.H., der Beginn der weltbekannten Automarke.
On the way back from my holiday in beautiful Slovenia, we drive through the valleys of Austria. The autobahn winds its way through the country through numerous tunnels and kilometer-long passes. In the midst of this picturesque backdrop lies the small town of Gmünd in Carinthia, which is home to a very special museum. It is almost 80 years ago that a talented designer chose this place as his office home. We're talking about none other than Ferdinand Porsche. From 1944 to 1951, the Porsche Constructions Ges.m.b.H., the beginning of the world-famous car brand, peddled in Gmünd.
1982 fand sich ein privater Porscheenthusiast und fasste den Gedanken, ein eigenes Porschemuseum zu eröffnen. Das erste private Museum Europas, mitten in Gmünd, dem Geburtsort der Marke Porsche. Helmut Pfeifhofers Faszination begann schon in Kindheitstagen: Mit Söhnen der Porsche Konstrukteure ging er zur Schule, 1956 folgte der erste Porsche 356, welchen er liebevoll restaurierte. Aus dieser Faszination wurde eine Sammelleidenschaft, welche heute von Besuchern bewundert werden kann. 48 Fahrzeuge umfasst die Sammlung, ausgewählte Modelle werden im ehemaligen "Marhof", welcher ebenfalls von Familie Pfeifhofer renoviert wurde, ausgestellt und dabei ergänzt von Museumsexponaten aus Stuttgart. Highlights sind zweifelsohne ein 356 aus der Gmünder Serie, mit Alukarosse und Nummer 356 0020. oder der Porsche 919, der LMP1 Rennwagen aus Le Mans. Jedes ausgestellte Fahrzeug erzählt seine eigene Geschichte. Wir möchten euch jedoch nicht alles erzählen, sondern empfehlen dieses besondere Museum einmal zu besuchen!
In 1982, a private Porsche enthusiast came up with the idea of opening his own Porsche museum. The first private museum in Europe, in the middle of Gmünd, the birthplace of the Porsche brand. Helmut Pfeifhofer's fascination began as a child: he went to school with the sons of the Porsche designers, and in 1956 the first Porsche 356 followed, which he lovingly restored. This fascination turned into a passion for collecting, which can be admired by visitors today. The collection includes 48 vehicles, selected models are exhibited in the former "Marhof", which was also renovated by the Pfeifhofer family, and is supplemented by museum exhibits from Stuttgart. Highlights are undoubtedly a 356 from the Gmünder series, with aluminum body and number 356 0020. or the Porsche 919, the LMP1 racing car from Le Mans. Each vehicle on display tells its own story.
